Mentz passed away in January 2005.
International Letters of condolences were
received from New York to California; from
Europe, Asia, Latin and South America, &
The Middle East and more. Judge Mentz
was known as the "Gentleman Judge" and will
be remembered fondly by all who worked with
him in the US and Internationally. He
is survived by his wife, 5 children and 10
grandchildren. Judge Mentz was also
well respected for his service to our country
as a WWII combat veteran and bronze star recipient.
Presently a scholarship program has been set
up in his honor. The Judge Mentz Memorial
Scholarship Program has already helped
needy students in The United States, Mexico,
India, China, Europe, Malaysia, The Middle
East and more. Special memorials have
been given in honor of Judge Mentz in New
York, San Francisco, China, Singapore, India,
Dubai and in the EU. Judge Mentz worked for
the federal government for over 25 years in
service to our country in war and with the
federal judiciary. In his private life, Judge
Mentz was a family man, tree farmer, tennis
player, historian, author, musician and committed
to public and charitable service. |
This
is public information and research on the
background of The Hon. Henry A. Mentz, Jr.
who was a distinguished Senior US District
Judge for the Eastern District of Louisiana.
Judge Mentz devoted substantial efforts
over his life to legal, academic, government,
charity, and community service. Judge Mentz
was the founder and President of several
successful corporations over his lifetime
and gave of himself without expectation
to charity over his life.
- Judge
Mentz was born in New Orleans in 1920
but lived in Hammond, Louisiana from 1928
until 1982.
- He
moved back to New Orleans when he was
appointed a US Federal Judge by a unanimous
vote of the United States Senate in 1982.
- He
was salutatorian of his high school class.
- He
was awarded a scholarship to Tulane University
at the age of 16 and later Graduated with
Distinction.
- He
served as a Member of the Law Review at
Louisiana State University & also
attended law coursework at Tulane University
- He
graduated from LSU Law in 1943 and immediately
enlisted as a private in the Army, fought
in "The Battle of the Bulge" and in central
Germany as an Alpha Bravo weapons specialist
and Sergeant, and served his country until
honorable discharge in late 1945. He was
awarded two Battle Stars and the Bronze
Star Medal. Served the JAG Corp. after
the war had been won.
- His
battalion and company Liberated vital
strategic sectors and several "concentration
camps" during WWII
- Upon
return from WWII he served Louisiana as
Special Counsel to the Democrat Party
controlled LA Senate
- He
has been active in the S. Louisiana community
for the last 50 years.
- He
has served as a Board Member of the Salvation
Army in NO
- Served
two-terms as President of the Louisiana
Civil Service League
- Served
as President of The Multi Parish Bar Association
on the Northshore
- Active
in providing Legal Assistance to Minorities.
Created and Chaired indigent pro-bono
organizations in Louisiana
- Written,
edited, and published scholarly research
on the Bible in his book "The Combined
Gospels" which was published in 1975.
- Wrote,
published, and edited several hundred
legal opinions and articles
- Served
as a Board Member of Southeastern Louisiana
University
- Served
Loyola University in New Orleans in various
capacities
- Served
on Several Boards and Committees for Tulane
University
- Judge
Mentz has been active in forestation and
tree farming for 30 years
- Chairman
for the Hammond, Louisiana "City Industrial
Board"
- Chairman
of March of Dimes & American Red Cross
- New Orleans and Hammond.
- Served
on the Executive Committee of the Council
for a Better Louisiana
- Served
two terms on the Board of Directors of
WYES, a New Orleans public television
station

of the Louisiana Council for Music and
the Performing Arts, 1995-96
- Recipient,
Distinguished Services Award, AMVETS,
1950
- Louisiana
Civil Service League, Honorary Life Chairman
- Distinguished
Service Award, Delta Tau Delta Fraternity
- Played
Clarinet in the Tulane University Band
1937-41 and remained a Jazz-o-phile for
his life.

as a Visiting Federal Judge in Boston,
New York, San Francisco, Houston, Los
Angeles, Miami, and Chicago.

a special scholarship fund for Loyola,
LSU and Tulane Law Schools.
- Father
of 5 children and married to the former
Ann Lamantia for 48 years.
- Held
Various Faculty Recognition and Appointments
at Law Schools and other Graduate Training
Academys.
- A
lifetime of devotion to various charities.
As a note, Jam. Lindler has been a lawyer
and Senior Law Clerk that worked with
the Federal Courts for well over 10
years. We believe that she is a graduate
of UVA at the very top of her class.
Ms. Lindler has handled several hundred
cases and opinions with and for Judge
Mentz in her 10 year tenure and has
vast expertise. Ms. Lindler has handled
cases and research in the federal courts
on the East and West Coast in New York,
LA, San Francisco, Chicago, Miami, Houston,
and Boston. More recently, Jam. Lindler
served in an official capacity to assist
9-11 victims in New York City.
